West of Stearns Wharf

...looking south past the end of the pier, and off towards Santa Cruz Island. I once read a letter to the editor pointing out that a wharf is a mooring structure built along the shore, while a pier is a structure that extends out into the ocean or other body of water. Thus, Stearn's Wharf should be called Stearn's Pier. However, having heard it referred to as Stearn's Wharf for 50 odd years, I must say that correct as it may be, it just doesn't sound right
