The 4th of July at More Mesa beach

Just a quick watercolor sketch. There was a lot of misty atmosphere in amongst those cliffs. That's what I was trying for.

Went back to do a larger watercolor from the sketch I made earlier. I was surprised to see how much difference a few months had made. In the lighting, I mean. The leaves of the trees had been mostly in shadow when I did the sketch, but on this day, they were all sunlit and much lighter in value as a result. I did not notice this till I had already laid in the sky. So I quit, intending to come back with some opaque white on another day.
